Kawerau Medical Centre Mural

The large mural in the reception area was painted by artist Emma Malota, cousin of Dr Emily Hermanson and is based on the history of Kawerau. “Kawerau” was an ancestor of the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe, a grandson of the great Toi-Kai Rakau, a famous chief who lived in the Bay of Plenty before the 1350AD Maori fleet arrived. Ngati Tuwharetoa lived on berries, fern roots and tawhara, so "Kawerau" got his name from the "gathering and carrying of leaves" at harvest time. Rongoa (traditional Maori medicine) is the theme of the mural, and plants such as Harakeke, Kawakawa, Koromiko/Kokomuka, Rata, Manuka, Ponga are depicted. The weaving pattern represents the banks of the Tarawera river, and the kowhaiwhai pattern, it's swift moving current, as it flows past the maunga Putauaki (Mt Edgecumbe) and the town of Kawerau. The addition of birds and insects bring the whole mural to life!

We are displaying more of Emma's artwork throughout the building, or check out her website here.

New Zealander of the Year Dr Lance O'Sullivan

Kawerau Medical Centre was honoured to have New Zealand's inspirational Primary Healthcare Hero as our guest of Honour at the Grand Opening on 30 May 2014.

Northland general practitioner Lance O'Sullivan was awarded the Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year 2014. The Kaitaia-based doctor was honoured for his leadership, vision and advocacy in healthcare. Dr O'Sullivan and his wife, Tracy, established low-cost health clinic Te Kohanga Whakaora (Nest of Wellness). He also set up Northland's first fulltime, school-based health clinic MOKO, which provides medical care to 2000 children across the region. His Kainga Ora (Well Home) initiative fixes rundown homes in the community.

If you haven't heard him speak before, be prepared to be amazed!

Minister of Health Tony Ryall

Kawerau Medical Centre was honoured to have Kawerau local and longserving Health Minister Tony Ryall speak at our Grand Opening.

Minister Ryall has done an extraordinary job at cutting hospital waiting times and has been instrumental at increasing VLCA funding for Rural General Practices. He orchestrated National's Policy to make GP visits FREE for children aged 13yrs and under (from July next year).

Minister Ryall is a very entertaining and engaging  speaker and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed his humorous speech!.
